Timing
Design and manufacture take the most time; on-site work is typically two to four weeks. The renovation steps page shows each stage.
Makeover or full renovation?
If the layout works and cabinets are sound, a kitchen makeover may be enough. If the layout is the problem, go for a full renovation.
Benchtops
Engineered stone is off the table since July 2024. Porcelain suits most busy family kitchens, while laminate keeps costs down. See benchtops and splashbacks.
Storage
Drawers beat cupboards, and a walk-in or butler's pantry is the most requested upgrade for bigger families.
Approvals
Central Coast Council has covered the whole region since the former Gosford and Wyong councils merged in 2016. Structural changes and extensions need the right approval; internal like-for-like renovations in houses generally do not. Units and villas need strata approval.
Coastal conditions
Humidity and salt air are tough on cheaper cabinet boards and hardware. Moisture-resistant materials, sealed edges and a ducted rangehood help. See cabinetry and storage.

Questions people ask before they commit
How much does a kitchen renovation cost?
As a 2026 guide: makeover $12,000–$22,000, same-layout replacement $18,000–$32,000, custom family kitchen $32,000–$52,000, larger or reconfigured kitchen $52,000–$85,000 or more.
How long will we be without a kitchen?
Usually two to four weeks of on-site work.
Is engineered stone still available?
No. Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs have been banned in Australia since 1 July 2024. Porcelain, natural stone, laminate, timber and compliant alternatives are available.
Do I need council approval?
Internal kitchen renovations in a house are generally exempt if there is no structural change. Central Coast Council or a certifier handles approvals where they are needed. Units and villas usually need owners corporation approval.
Could our kitchen contain asbestos?
Homes built or renovated before about 1990 may have asbestos in linings, eaves, old flooring or some splashback sheeting. It is tested before demolition.
What deposit can be charged?
No more than 10 per cent in NSW. For work over $20,000, home building compensation cover must be in place before a deposit is requested.
